Emergency Services Bulletin #1
High Tides Pose Flooding Danger
Date: January 11, 2001: 9:00 AM
Release: Immediately
Contact: Dinah Phillips, Public Information Officer
The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood warning today for Santa Cruz and other
coastal counties due to extremely large waves coupled with high tides. An intense storm in
Northern California is generating large waves that are moving into the central California coastal
waters. NWS wave models indicate that waves may approach shore at heights of 25 to 35 feet,
with larger rogue waves possible.
Large breakers may inundate and flood parts of the coastal area including the Monterey Bay.
High tide in the Monterey Bay today will be plus 6.6 feet at 10:45 AM.
This is a potentially life threatening situation. Do not underestimate the power and danger of
these waves. Surfing, swimming, fishing, boating, and observing large waves from rocks or
coastal structures during high surf is extremely dangerous. It is especially dangerous to view
high surf from exposed rocks, low-lying beaches, piers, and jetties. An unexpected high wave
can easily sweep the unwary into the sea, usually with tragic results. Coastal viewing should be
accomplished from high ground, well back from the surf. This applies to residents and visitors.
At this time, East Cliff Drive is closed between 21st and Palisades, and the Capitola Esplanade
has been closed. People are asked to avoid these areas to keep from hampering emergency
responders.
Free sands and bags are available at the following locations. Residents should bring their own
shovels and tools and plan to fill the bags themselves.
